33 – The Sure Thing

Posted in Messages with tags , , , , on January 26, 2010 by Scott Hobbs

Ever heard the phrase?

“As sure as the sun rise”

It’s amazing – every morning if you get up early enough I will bet you good money that the light will rise over the horizon.

So sure is the sun rise and the orbit of the moon that most ancient civilizations created their calendars based upon their observations of these celestial bodies.

The calendars still hold true today accurately and consistently.

It’s a guarantee.  It’s a sure thing.

Tonight I want to talk about the two ends of the spectrum.  Things that are a sure thing and that aren’t.  Things you can bank on and things that you can’t put your faith in.

Not so sure

People, no matter how great they are.  Just aren’t sure things.

-          Israelites letting God down in OT

Money, no matter how much it is.  Just isn’t a sure thing

-          Israelites falling away when they had more and grumbling when they had less

Circumstances – they way things are now – just aren’t sure things

-          Israelites were about to fall into real dire circumstances

For sure  – Jeremiah 33:19-26 – reference the Sun and Moon bit from intro

Never pass away until the end of time

Deed/Word Theory

God’s presence in our lives

-          Never leave nor forsake us

-          The indwelling of the Holy Spirit

-          This is the key to everything else

Jeremiah 29:11

Prosper

-          As the church, as a people

-          John 10:10 “Life overflowing” – grow “Life to the full”

Suffering but not to harm

-          We all will suffer – at the very least in death

-          It’s up to us with what we do – Paul, Philippians 3:10 “Fellowship of Sufferings”

-          Embrace and grow – fight and die

Hope

-          1 Timothy 1:1 “Jesus, our hope”  His name is Jesus – life overflowing and eternally

A future

-          The church remains and will endure Ephesians 5:25-27

-          Eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord

How are you living? What are you building your life upon? A sure thing?

Matthew 7: Foolish man/Wise man – It’s a choice we make in the way we live our lives and prioritize what we have been given

I am proposing a drastic change inside and out.

33 – Prepare

Posted in Messages with tags , , , , , on January 26, 2010 by Scott Hobbs

Last week we talked about looking at your past and not being  overwhelmed by your baggage.  To cry out to God and he will answer.  To have hope because he has given us the promise of a future.

Tonight, I want to talk about the fact that you are where you are, how to properly look at it, and prepare for those promises that have been given to us.

I shared with you about where I’ve been since 2001 and how it came to a head a few weeks ago

  • Quickly sum up burn out story again

Jeremiah 33:10 –“ You say about this place . . .” – This where  they  were

Set up story again

  • The Babylonian armies under Nebuchadrezzar were laying siege to Jerusalem, with its fall and destruction imminent
  • Babylon had already captured the city once in 598 BC, and replaced the Davidic king (Jehoichin) with a puppet king, Zedekiah. However, because of world events and a resurgent nationalism, Zedekiah was persuaded to rebel, which precipitated the return of the Babylonian armies to lay siege to Jerusalem in 588 BC. Within months of the beginning of that siege, a new Pharaoh came to power in Egypt. Sensing the threat posed by Babylon control of Palestine, Pharaoh Hophra sent an army north to confront the Babylonians and relieve the siege of Jerusalem. As the Egyptian army approached, the Babylonians temporarily lifted the siege (37:4-5), which led to a euphoric sense of relief in Jerusalem as many insisted that God had provided another miraculous deliverance as He had done in the days of Hezekiah (2 Kings 18-19).
  • But Jeremiah knew better. He continued to insist, as he had for 40 years, even in the face of threat of execution as a traitor, that this time God would not spare the city and the land. It was not only because the people had so long been unfaithful to Him, but also because they continually refused to repent and return to God beyond expecting Him to bail them out of trouble (chs. 6-7). The “weeping” prophet (8:18-9:1) knew that an end was coming, and in fact was only a matter of months away.
  • Still, Jeremiah resolutely held out the hope of a new future. Jeremiah saw a newness arising only beyond the ashes of a devastating catastrophe. For Jeremiah’s vision of the future to be true, that future had to be God’s future, not a future orchestrated by kings and soldiers, implemented by alliances and power, and worked out in the security of false ideas about God. Jeremiah’s hope was rooted in the ongoing activity of God in the world on His terms, and on His terms only.
  • I have been looking at the devastation of my life in these recent days and feeling hopeless
  • The Israelites were looking at the devastation of their cities and the coming exile and saw no future –“ a desolate waste”

1)      Let’s be honest – You gotta be honest  if you are going to prepare for the promise – if we are going to be able to receive anything

  • Things were bad for the Israelites and then got a little better
  • So they got lax and didn’t come completely clean with God
  • We must be brutally honest with where we are and where God wants us and the gap in-between or we will wind up worse!
    • When I got up from my breakdown and had to admit I was not at a good place
    • I have had to evaluate the patterns that led me there
    • I’ve had to ask others what  they see and listen (Listen to Jeremiah)

2)      Let’s prepare – You have to take where you honestly are and then prepare accordingly to receive what God wants to give you

  • You can’t keep doing the same things the same way and expect things to change
  • There are things that the Lord wants to teach you and give to you that you may be unable to receive
    • Anger, fear, pain, selfishness
    • Remember it’s on God’s terms and His terms only
    • We must realign to God’s heart via Luke 10:27 “Heart, Soul, Mind, and Strength”

This is what I’ve been doing to realign and prepare

  1. Put God first
    1. Repentance
    2. At the beginning of the Day
      1. i.      Rise early, Sleep in
      2. ii.      Let scripture study you
      3. iii.      Journal
      4. Put Things in Order
        1. Prioritize
          1. i.      85, 10, 5
          2. ii.      Fill and drain
          3. Take Care of the Temple
            1. Rest
              1. i.      Say no
              2. ii.      Sleep in
              3. iii.      Retreat
        2. Live
          1. i.      Exercise
          2. ii.      Eating habits

Results

  • Getting energy back
  • Getting  vision and passion back
  • Getting  patience and compassion back
  • Getting creativity back
  • I’m hearing His voice and feeling His presence

33 – Begin

Posted in Messages, Resources with tags , , , , , , on January 11, 2010 by Scott Hobbs

A week and a half ago, I had a nervous breakdown. Not an upset moment or angry fit. A bonified breakdown.

It has probably been 9 years in the making . . .

  • Quick sum-up since 2001
  • Quick re-tell of two weeks leading up to breakdown and taking a nap to shut down

A past and habit of poor choices with ongoing and permanent consequences.

  • I didn’t know in 2001, that working instead of grieving would lead to this
  • I didn’t plan to internalize change as failure and let it chip away at me
  • However, when we misuse what God has given it eventually all comes crashing down

Have I been intentionally living an un-Godly life – NO!

Have I been doing some things well – ABSOLUTELY!

Have I been, in some ways, living at an unsustainable pace – You got it

When I woke up, I knew 2 things

  • I was not well
  • I was determined to live different, to begin again

So I sat down and talked to my wife, I began reading a book called “Leading on Empty” by Wayne Cordeiro and making some decisions. I made it through the week. On Saturday, I began to feel the hand of the Lord, a second wind. However, on Sunday following church (we lost a guitar, a piano, sound, and video, and finally my voice) I had that knot and anxiousness again

I began to cry out to God in my brokenness and determination, knowing that it is Him alone that restore things.

Woke up at 5 AM with Jeremiah 33 on the mind.

  • NIV – “The Promise of Restoration” – I Cried.
  • We’re going to spend the next 3 weeks looking at Chapter 33 of Jeremiah as we begin this new year and I’m going to unpack for you the things the Lord laid out for me to embrace the life He’s designed us for.
  1. Captive in tough times – Context
    1. Jeremiah is in prison and the city is under siege by the Babylonians, they are about to go into exile and lose everything that has been important to them.
    2. God has been harsh dealing with His people because of their past wrongs
    3. The people have been reaping the consequences of bad decisions and disobedience
  2. A second time – Verse 1 – He is always pursuing, calling, reaching.
  3. Call to me – Verse 3
    1. Call to Him alone – deal with your idols
    2. Put your trust in Him – rely on Him as your source
    3. He will reveal – the things we cannot figure out on our own

As we begin this new year, you may look at the situations and decisions of you past and where they have brought you and be overwhelmed.

  1. Out of the past, the sufferings will rise:
    1. Vs 6 – Healing, Health, Peace, and Security
    2. Vs 7 – Rebuilt in freedom
    3. Vs 8 – Clean and forgiven
    4. Vs 9 – Restored to worship and blessed as God’s children

I want to encourage you to look at what God has promised and have hope! “He never leaves or forsakes us”

Just as God worked in and through the sufferings of the Israelites, today you can look up out of your past and towards this year and have hope. If we call out to Him, listen to, and respond to His voice – We have hope and an amazing future – Jeremiah 29:11

Next week – we will look at our present and how we are to structure our lives for service, holiness, and abundance.

Last Week and This Week!

Rob did a fantastic job sharing this past week.  He reminded all of us that if we will love and follow Christ that He will work all of the things in our lives for our Good (His Kingdom purposes) – Romans 8:28.  I also love that responses that Job had in Chapter one and Chapter two towards the testing in his life that Rob pointed out.  Chapter One was mourning the loss and worship.  Chapter two was declaring that good and bad it’s up to God – He’s sovereign.  The best place for us to put all of our life is in His hands.

This coming Sunday night we’re going to look at worship.  What is it really?  What should it look like?  What is my role?

Don’t miss it.  Bring somebody!

Idol Worship

Posted in Messages, Worship with tags , , on November 1, 2009 by Scott Hobbs

Come hang out with us tonight as we explore what idols are lurking in our lives.  Is it the way we do church? Is it your car? Is it your boyfriend/girlfriend? Is it your fear? Is it your pain?

Tonight we’re going to ask the questions.  We hope that you will dig for the answers.  There can only be one.

Following tonight’s service, take some time this week and post your thoughts and reflections here.

We’re all going to worship something.
